Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital Completes Initial Brain Tumor Treatments Using ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery System

Wednesday, July 03, 2024

ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc., a leader in surgical robotics, is excited to announce the completion of the first patient treatments using the ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital.

This is the second installation of the ZAP-X system in Korea, marking a significant step forward in providing advanced medical care in the Asia-Pacific region.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a non-invasive and painless treatment option for various primary and metastatic brain tumors, as well as other head and neck conditions.

With outcomes comparable to or better than traditional open surgeries, SRS typically requires only one to five brief outpatient visits, allowing patients to often return to normal activities the same day.

Previously, radiosurgery patients at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital were treated in the Radiation Oncology department using multi-purpose radiation systems designed for breast, lung, and prostate cancers.

With the new ZAP-X platform, the Neurosurgery department will now handle cranial SRS treatments independently. The ZAP-X system is specifically optimized for cranial, head, and neck applications, ensuring the highest precision and minimizing radiation exposure to healthy tissues.

Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital, located 60 minutes from Seoul's Incheon International Airport, is a prestigious medical institution established by Dongguk University.

The hospital features 33 departments, 47 specialized clinics, and 11 specialized centers, all committed to providing exceptional patient care through advanced technology and innovation.

The ZAP-X system’s innovative design utilizes gyroscopic mobility to accurately target high-dose radiation on tumors from numerous angles, preserving healthy brain tissue and cognitive function.

Its vault-free and cobalt-free design eliminates the need for expensive shielded radiation rooms and the handling of radioactive materials.

"The ZAP-X system represents a significant advancement in our ability to treat primary and metastatic brain tumors, as well as conditions like trigeminal neuralgia.

Its precision and non-invasive approach allow us to provide the best possible care with minimal side effects and downtime."

"The ZAP-X platform offers numerous advantages over traditional radiation systems. It eliminates the need for a shielded radiation bunker and allows for easy installation in our existing outpatient Neurosurgery department."
